WEBB & WARNER ANNOUNCE $51 MILLION TO IMPROVE VIRGINIA'S PUBLIC HOUSING

Investments Part of Economic Stimulus Package

U.S. Senators Jim Webb and Mark R. Warner today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has released nearly $51 million for improvements to public housing units that will directly benefit the Commonwealth as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Twenty-nine local Redevelopment and Housing Authorities in Virginia will receive economic recovery funds through the HUD's Public Housing Capital Fund Program to address much-needed improvements to public housing units, create jobs and reduce energy costs.

"This $51 million investment will help to ensure that urban and rural areas have the resources necessary to properly maintain Virginia's public housing facilities," said Senator Webb. "Funds for these improvements, requested by local agencies, will create jobs, allow communities to complete long-standing projects, and reduce monthly energy bills for residents."

"These investments will quickly put people to work modernizing public housing units, making improvements to increase energy efficiency and lowering our long-term operating costs," Senator Warner said.

HUD's Capital Fund Program provides annual funding to public housing authorities to develop, finance, and/or modernize the public housing in their communities. This funding can also be used to make large-scale improvements such as new roofs and for the replacement of plumbing and electrical systems to more energy efficient standards.
